Marguerite Lavallée is a professor at the School of Psychology of Laval University since 1985. She is co director of the research laboratory « Psychology and Cultures ».

After having obtained her Baccalaureate degree in Nursing (1964) and her Master in Psychology (1967) at Ottawa University, she was granted a scholarship from Canada’s Art Council to pursue her doctoral studies at the University of Geneva, under the supervision of Professor Hermine Sinclair, Doctor of Psycholinguistics. Her thesis, entitled « Second Language Acquisition in Relation to the Concrete Operations Stage in Children » was obtained in 1973.

During her doctoral studies, Professor Lavallée worked as a teaching assistant of both Professors Barbel Inhelder and Vinh Bang, as well as a research assistant at Jean Piaget’s International Genetic Epistemology Center at the University of Geneva.

The same year, she joined a piagetian research team, subsidized by the National Funds of Swiss Research, under Professor Pierre Dasen’s direction, to conduct a longitudinal study on intellectual development of Baoule Children in Ivory Coast. Results of this study are available in different scientific articles as well as in the book entitled « Naissance de l’intelligence de l’enfant baoulé de Côte d’Ivoire » (1978).

Since 1976, Professor Lavallée has been involved in higher education teaching and research in different countries (University of Constantine, Algeria (1976-77); University of Genève (1977-79); University of Québec in Montréal (1979-80); École Normale Supérieure d’Abidjan, Côte d’Ivoire (1980-1985) and Laval University, Québec (1985 and on).

Her teaching and research interests are centered on adult development, intercultural psychology and social representations. Mainly subsidized by the Human Science Research Council, her main studies were conducted on adult cognitivo-ethical development and identity development, on acculturative processes viewed as part of adult personal development. Her researches on social representations were performed with TV directors (gender differences), with adolescents (their representations of science), with children, their parents and teachers (food habits and representations; TV practices and representations). She is also collaborating on a research-intervention program called (« Alcanzando el Exito en Secundaria »), conducted by Professor Rosa del Carmen Flores (UNAM in Mexico) : this program aims the reinsertion of secondary school dropouts’ reinsertion within their school program. She also participates in studies on the application of a software (Lectura inteligente) among secondary, college and university Mexican students One of these studies aims the academic alphabetization and personal epistemology development of future psychologists.

Member of the International Association for Intercultural Research (ARIC) since its beginning, she was its President from 1991 to 1994. She is also a member of the Research Group on interdisciplinarity and social representations (GEIRSO) and of the Edition Committee of its Review (JIRSO) since 2002 and a member of the Research Group on Images and social representations (IDEA) since 2003.

Since her arrival at Laval University in Quebec, Professor Lavallée has also detained different administrative functions. For example, she was Vice-Dean of Studies at the Faculty of Social Sciences (1991-1994). She was also Director of the Psychology Master programs (1999-2004), Director by interim of the First cycle programs (2006-07) and is now Assistant Director (2007- on) of the School of Psychology. Since 2009, she has become President of Laval University’s Ethical Committee of Psychology and Education Sciences.
